New Year, New Skin

  How many of us are guilty of starting the new year with unmanageable and unrealistic new year’s resolutions? Prevention is always better when it comes to health and beauty.  Focused below are just a few simple tweaks and changes that you can make to create lasting results that will leave your skin looking radiant and refreshed all year round. The best and easiest way to make a positive change and start to the new year is to invest in your own well being.  

Beauty Sleep

We call it beauty sleep for a reason- our skin actually repairs and rebalance itself while sleeping and the average person needs around seven or eight hours. A lack of sleep can have a major negative impact on our mood, mental capabilities and on our complexions.  Resulting symptoms can include a dehydrated complexion, breakouts, and redness leaving skin looking dull and lacklustre.   

Take off your make up at night

No matter how late it is, this one is essential! As mentioned before, the skin repair itself at night so avoid clogging those pores with makeup and everyday pollution. Give your skin a chance to breathe, and avoid eye irritations from mascara left on overnight. Apply Sun Protection daily

It is a well-known fact that the number one cause of ageing is UV exposure even on cloudy or rainy days. It has been long advised by doctors to apply sun protection daily, a minimum of SPF 30 that protects from both UVA and UVB rays. The tricky part is finding a moisturiser that offers enough protection and does not feel too heavy. Look for a moisturiser that contains a physical barrier with zinc or titanium oxide for best protection.  Properly using sunscreen and re-application is essential to protection.   Mineral powder with an SPF for reapplication and instant protection is always handy to carry around.   It’s never too late to start protecting your skin.

Do not Forget the Eyes 

The eye area is where the skin is most delicate, and it needs to be treated with care. Don’t neglect your neck

Be sure to apply your daily SPF moisturiser to the front and sides of your neck to protect it from the harmful damage of UV rays that can cause wrinkles and fine lines. The neck is an extension of your face, so paying more attention to it will dramatically reduce the appearance of wrinkles and keep it looking youthful for years to come.  

Don’t pick at blemishes

No matter how much you pick at a blemish it will not go away faster, in fact, you will cause more damage than good, possibly leaving post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Picking can cause bleeding and oozing resulting in a scab that can cause inflammation and scarring. Letting the body heal itself is crucial as it will work overtime to repair the skin if there is an infection, and picking at the scab could make the blemish linger for weeks or even months instead of a couple of days. If you would like to repair the skin that little bit faster, you can apply a topical spot treatment to speed up the process a little.
