Skincare SOS – how to treat sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is a condition where certain factors cause the skin’s natural barrier to weaken and break down. When this happens, the nerve endings at the top layer of the skin become sensitive and irritated.

Sensitive skin can be caused by several factors, some of which include sun exposure, pollution, allergic reactions, extreme weather, irregular sleep patterns, and hormonal changes.

Dermatologists generally diagnose sensitive skin by looking for areas of dryness, red patches, stinging or tightness accompanied by pustules, erosion, and bumps. Although it is best to have a dermatologist diagnose sensitive skin, if you experience any of the common symptoms listed below, you are likely to fall into this category:

  1. Tight/Uncomfortable skin
  2. Skin that is tender to touch
  3. Tendency towards redness
  4. Uneven texture, dry, flaky skin
  5. Itchy skin, often after wearing clothes made up of synthetic fabrics

SKINCARE ADVICE FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

If you have, follow a consistent skincare regimen that is suited to your skin type. Don’t forget that your skincare routine must include application of sunscreen with at least SPF30 to protect you from the harsh UVA/UVB rays, all year round. Also, try not to touch or scratch your face, since this will only make the sensitivity worse.

Try to stay away from products that contain alcohol, additives, perfume, or sulfates, since such ingredients tend to strip the natural skin barrier away leading to irritation, dryness, itching, redness or excess oil production.

Instead, opt for products that contain rose oil, oatmeal, and chamomile since they have anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the skin. MZ Skin’s Hydra-Bright Golden Eye and Hydra-Lift Golden Facial Treatment Masks are dermatologically tested to suit your sensitive skin. They contain complex active ingredients that help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation to give you a youthful, timeless appearance whilst soothing and restoring skin.

Lastly, remember that sensitivity occurs differently on your face and differently on your body, so only use tailored made products to help protect and calm these areas.

SKINCARE ROUTINE TO FOLLOW

Step 1: Begin your skincare routine by cleansing with a gentle cleanser, preferably containing chamomile or oatmeal, that doesn’t strip away the natural oils of your skin

Step 2: Next, moisturize your face to stimulate hydration but stay away from synthetic or perfumed moisturizers since they are likely to cause irritation

Step 3: A good SPF, preferably with zinc oxide since it reduces inflammation and keeps moisture locked in without being harsh on your skin.
